Rabies
(a.k.a Rab)

Lethal bug which infects travellers who are bitten or scratched by an infected animal. Rabies is deadly unless it’s treated straight away, so travellers in high-risk countries should get help immediately if they are bitten or scratched.

Tetanus
(a.k.a Tetan)

This terrible bug infects travellers around the world by getting into open wounds. It causes stiff jaw muscles, painful muscle spasms, a fever and a rapid heartbeat. If you have a deep wound, or one that has dirt in it, get medical help.

Food & Water

Hepatitis A
(a.k.a Heppa)

An unpleasant bug which can cause nausea, abdominal pain and even liver failure. Travellers across most of the world should beware of contaminated food and water or close contact with infected people.

Cholera
(a.k.a Colin)

Horrible bug guilty of causing diarrhoea, vomiting and severe dehydration in people travelling to South and Central America, Africa and Asia. Beware of infected food and water.

Typhoid
(a.k.a Tyrone)

Potentially fatal bacteria guilty of causing a very high temperature, stomach pain, headaches and constipation or diarrhoea. Travellers in areas without good sanitation or clean water should watch out for contaminated food and water.

Mosquitoes, Ticks & Biting Insects

Chikungunya
(a.k.a Chiko)

This nasty little virus infects its victims through mosquito bites. It causes fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headaches and skin rashes.

Dengue Fever
(a.k.a Denny)

This unpleasant virus is spread through mosquito bites; it’s usually mild but it can be fatal. Symptoms include a fever, a severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea and a red rash.

Japanese Encephalitis
(a.k.a Jen)

A deadly virus which infects travellers across Asia through mosquito bites. It can cause long term mental and physical disabilities, with very limited or no treatment options.

Lyme Disease
(a.k.a Lyle)

This sneaky microbe can infect you if you are bitten by a tick, causing a red, ‘bullseye’-shaped rash and flu-like symptoms which can sometimes develop into a long-term condition.

Malaria
(a.k.a Mal)

A deadly disease which can infect travellers through a single mosquito bite. It causes fever, headache, chills, muscle pain and vomiting. People travelling to Africa, Asia and South America are at risk.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis
(a.k.a Tobee)

Nasty little bug which attacks travellers in Europe and Asia through tick bites. It causes flu-like symptoms which might become more serious and can be fatal if left untreated.

Yellow Fever
(a.k.a Yella)

A dangerous virus which infects travellers in Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean through mosquito bites. Can cause muscle pain, headaches, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting and occasionally death.

Zika
(a.k.a Zeke)

Vicious virus which infects travellers in Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia and the Western Pacific through mosquito bites. Symptoms are mild, but pregnant women should watch out because Zika can cause serious birth defects.

Diphtheria
(a.k.a Dippy)

Horrible bug which causes diarrhoea, vomiting and severe dehydration in people travelling to South and Central America, Africa and Asia. Found in infected food and water.

A nasty bug which infects the liver and is passed on through bodily fluids. Look out for flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain and yellow skin and eyes.

Measles
(a.k.a Meezy)

Horrible virus which infects travellers all over the world, causing cold-like symptoms, a fever, sore eyes and a blotchy rash. It can sometimes lead to pneumonia and encephalitis.

Meningococcal Meningitis
(a.k.a Mengee)

Lethal bacteria responsible for causing hearing loss, brain damage or death. Travellers in Africa can catch it through close contact with infected people or by sharing their personal possessions.

Polio
(a.k.a Polly)

This untreatable virus gives some people flu-like symptoms and nausea and in less than 1% of cases it can paralyse you.

Tuberculosis
(a.k.a Tuba)

This horrible bug usually attacks the lungs, causing a cough that lasts a long time, weight loss, fever, night sweats, tiredness, loss of appetite and swellings in the neck.

Whooping Cough
(a.k.a Hooper)

Travellers around the bug should watch out for this menacing microbe. It causes a cough which lasts for several months, with intense bouts of coughing which leave you gasping for breath.
